I’m an adjunct professor at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, teaching an intro journalism course to undergrads. My students will hone their reporting, writing and editing skills, and have opportunities to network with journalists at premier news outlets like the New York Times, Politico, the Washington Post, WNYC, NY1, Vox, Dotdash Meredith and others.

My students gave me these gorgeous flowers for the end of the semester.

Student reviews:

  • "I had Amanda as my professor and because of her, it was my favorite class of the semester. On the first day of class, where most professors would have started with a lecture, Amanda set up a mock press conference and had us writing heds and deks almost immediately. Every class that followed was equally practical: Instead of doing worksheets, we learned how to read financial reports. Instead of long lectures, we looked at ProPublica reports and public NYC datasets — all of which I would’ve thought were “advanced” journalism skills beyond my paygrade as a freshman, if it weren’t for Amanda’s guidance and initiative. She kept everything fast paced, and always pushed us to learn more and try harder, but she also clearly cared about us. Peppered in between writing exercises and lectures were lighthearted banter and check-ins, making the class never too challenging or monotonous. She brought in guest speakers and helped us form connections, and showed us countless useful resources to use not just in our writing, but for everything from networking to self care. I even have a little notebook now filled with countless tips and tricks I’ve learned from Amanda, tidbits I find priceless because of how useful they’ve proven themselves to be over and over. Through the semester, Amanda offered personal advice, industry tips, and even gave me the opportunity to shadow her at Morning Brew, which was an invaluable experience that I will not stop talking about. Having her as my professor has made me feel ready to take the next steps into my journalism career — with considerably more confidence than I would’ve had doing it alone. Amanda has taught me how to write articles, how to read a 10-K, and how to aim for what I want and take it. Any journalism student would be lucky to be in her class."

  • "Amanda was my professor for my first journalistic inquiry class. Her expertise within the journalistic field as well as her determination for students to succeed created a positive environment in the classroom. Amanda taught us important and concise lesson plans and helped us improve not only as students but incoming journalists. She is tough but ultimately was responsible for my writing becoming better. I would recommend Amanda and her teaching to anyone willing to put in the work to better themselves as a writer. Her experience, knowledge, and kindness were invaluable in the classroom."

  • “Amanda was my first journalism professor at NYU. She was instrumental in refining my reporting skills and honing my judgment as a journalist. Engaging, practical and exciting, her class gave us real-world reporting experience and allowed us to network with journalists across the country. Amanda's encouragement also inspired me to pursue a specialized beat. Because of her connections, I was able to publish my first professional story and secure an editorial assistant role. Amanda makes a large effort to pass her knowledge of the industry on to her students; as a result, I feel much more prepared as a young journalist after just one semester in her class.”
